Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Power and distinction, complex nose, exceptional qualities. Despite the drought, an abundant harvest, of excellent quality. A very fruity wine, rich and fleshy, with soft tannins.

Wine Spectator

Voluptuous and velvety. Dark ruby color. Intense aromas of blackberries, fresh mushrooms and dried herbs. Full-bodied, with loads of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. A big, youthful wine that needs time to mellow.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal.

Score: 94. —James Suckling, May 31, 1999.

International Wine Cellar

Full, deep red. Flamboyant aromas of cassis, currant leaf, tobacco, herbs and animal fur. Sweet, lush and lively; already showing lovely inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes long, strong and lively, with firm tannins and slow-mounting persistence. Earlier bottles of this wine appeared to be a bit more exotic, even slightly animal, but this offers a lovely combination of purity and sheer ripeness. Drink over the next 15 years.

Score: 93. —Stephen Tanzer,

Wine Advocate

Speaking of superior vintages, Pichon-Lalande's 1989, although not as profound as the 1995, 1994, 1986, 1983, or 1982, is a beautifully made wine. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, and a sweet, roasted nose of rich cassis fruit, herbs, and vanilla. Lush and round, this medium to full-bodied, nicely-textured, layered Pichon-Lalande possesses low acidity, outstanding ripeness, and beautiful purity and balance. It is already drinking surprisingly well, so owners should not hesitate to pull a cork. It should continue to offer rich, seductive drinking for another 15+ years.

Score: 92. —Robert Parker, February 1997.
